Misty highland forest, waterfalls and tree lodges where the animals come to you after dark. A short trip that feels nothing like the savanna.
Day 1: Nairobi to the Aberdares
Depart mid morning and drive north through Nyeri, arriving for a late lunch. Transfer to a tree lodge in the afternoon and spend the evening watching the floodlit waterhole from the viewing deck.
Day 2: Forest and moorland
A full day exploring the park, from bamboo forest up onto open moorland. Karuru Falls drops around 270 metres in three stages. Watch for bongo, giant forest hog and the rare black leopard.
Day 3: Return to Nairobi
An early morning at the waterhole, breakfast, then the drive back to Nairobi with an optional stop at a Nyeri coffee farm.
What makes it different
Game viewing here is static rather than mobile. Instead of driving to find animals, you sit above a waterhole and let them come. Bring warm layers, it is genuinely cold at 3,000 metres.
