Quick answer: Serengeti National Park covers 14,750 square kilometres in northern Tanzania, running from Ngorongoro north to the Kenyan border where it becomes the Masai Mara. It holds around two million migrating wildebeest and zebra, and roughly 3,000 lion, the largest population anywhere.
The name comes from the Maasai word siringet, meaning the place where the land runs on forever and that is exactly how it looks. The Serengeti holds the migration for roughly nine months of the year, so there is almost always somewhere in the park worth being. The Seronera valley in the centre is among the best places in Africa for leopard and cheetah.
