Quick answer: Tarangire National Park covers 2,850 square kilometres in northern Tanzania, about 120 km southwest of Arusha. The Tarangire River runs through it year round, which draws enormous elephant herds through the dry season. It is known for baobab trees and for having the highest concentration of wildlife outside the Serengeti in that season.

OVERVIEW AND LOCATION

Tarangire National Park At A Glance

Tarangire is often treated as a one night stop on the way to the Serengeti, which undersells it. Between June and October the river is the only reliable water for miles and the concentration of elephant, buffalo, zebra and wildebeest along it rivals anywhere in Tanzania. The baobabs give the landscape a character quite different from the open plains further north.

What You Will See and Do

Elephant Concentrations

Dry season herds of 300 or more gather along the river. Tarangire has one of the densest elephant populations anywhere in Tanzania.

Baobab Landscape

Huge, ancient baobabs dominate the skyline and give the park a look unlike any other on the northern circuit.

Dry Season Density

From June the river becomes the only water for a wide area, pulling in zebra, wildebeest, eland and the predators that follow them.
