Solo travel on safari is common, safe and often better than travelling in a group. The main thing to plan around is the single supplement.
Is it safe?
Yes. You are with a guide from pickup to drop off, camps are staffed and secure and the safari circuit is well established. Solo women travel this route constantly and report no particular difficulty.
The single supplement
The real cost issue. Lodges price per room, so a solo traveller pays close to double the per person rate. Group departures and camps that waive the supplement in green season are the two ways around it.
Shared or private vehicle
A shared vehicle cuts cost substantially and gives you company. A private vehicle means you control the day entirely, which matters if you are a photographer.
Meeting people
Camps are sociable places and communal dinners are normal. Most solo travellers find the evenings the easiest part of the trip.
What we would book
Green season, a mid range camp with a waived supplement and a shared vehicle for the first few days with a private one for the Mara.
