Eleven days is enough to reach the parks most visitors never see, and still finish with three nights in the Mara.
Days 1 to 3: Meru
North of Mount Kenya and rarely visited. Meru is green, well watered and holds a rhino sanctuary. You will likely have sightings entirely to yourself.
Days 4 to 5: Samburu
The northern frontier and the Samburu Special Five, five dry country species found nowhere else on the standard circuit.
Days 6 to 7: Ol Pejeta and Lake Nakuru
Ol Pejeta for chimpanzees and the last northern white rhinos, then Nakuru for its fenced rhino sanctuary and flamingo shallows.
Days 8 to 11: Lake Naivasha and the Masai Mara
A boat trip and a walk on Crescent Island, then three full nights in the Mara for the big cats and, in season, the river crossings.
Why this route works
It builds from quiet to spectacular. By the time you reach the Mara you have already seen a great deal, so the crowds there matter far less.
