Planning A Family Safari In Africa

Safari works very well with children, provided the itinerary is built around their attention span rather than yours.

Minimum ages

Most camps accept children from six, some from twelve for walking activities. Gorilla trekking has a hard minimum of fifteen. Always confirm before booking.

Keep drives short

Two hours is the practical limit for younger children. Choose parks with high game density so the waiting is minimal, and build in pool time in the middle of the day.

Where to go

Amboseli, Lake Nakuru and Ol Pejeta all work well. Short transfers, dependable sightings and family friendly camps. Save the long Tsavo drives for older children.

Private vehicle is worth it

With children it stops being a luxury. You control the timing, you can turn back when someone has had enough and nobody else is inconvenienced.

Practical points

Family tents or interconnecting rooms, malaria prophylaxis suitable for the child weight and a stock of snacks. Most camps will happily eat earlier for children.
