How To Choose A Kenya Safari

Choosing a Kenya safari comes down to four decisions: when you travel, which parks you visit, how you sleep and who you book with. Get those right and the rest follows.

Start with your dates

Your travel window decides more than anything else. July to October puts the Great Migration in the Masai Mara but fills the camps and lifts prices. January to March brings calving season and excellent predator activity with fewer vehicles. April to June is green, quiet and considerably cheaper.

Pick two or three parks, not five

The most common mistake is trying to see everything. Two nights minimum per park means you actually watch animals instead of watching the road. A week comfortably covers the Mara plus one other park.

Decide how you want to sleep

Budget camping runs about $150 to $220 per person per day. Mid range tented camps sit around $250 to $400. Luxury lodges start near $450. Park fees are identical whatever you spend, so the difference is comfort and vehicle privacy.

Check the operator is licensed

Every legitimate Kenyan operator holds a Tourism Regulatory Authority licence. Ask for the number. Be wary of anyone demanding full payment upfront, and insist on written inclusions before you pay a deposit.
