The single most common mistake is underestimating how cold a dawn game drive is at altitude.
Clothing
Neutral colours, long sleeves and trousers for mornings and evenings, shorts and t-shirts for the middle of the day. Avoid blue and black, which attract tsetse flies.
The fleece
Game drives leave before dawn and the Mara sits at 1,500 metres. A proper fleece or light down jacket matters more than anything else on this list.
Bags
Soft sided duffel bags rather than hard suitcases, especially if you are flying between airstrips. Light aircraft luggage limits are typically 15 kg including hand luggage.
Optics and power
Binoculars transform a game drive. Bring more camera batteries than you think and a power bank, because charging in camp can be limited to generator hours.
Health items
Malaria prophylaxis, high factor sunscreen, insect repellent with DEET and any prescription medication in its original packaging.
