Tsavo is vast and far less visited than the Mara, which is exactly its appeal. The elephants here take on a deep red colour from dust bathing in the volcanic soil. After three days in the bush you drop down to Diani, one of the finest beaches on the East African coast.
Itinerary
Depart Nairobi on the Mombasa road and enter Tsavo East through Buchuma or Sala gate. Afternoon game drive along the Voi River circuit, where elephant and buffalo come down to drink. Dinner and overnight at your lodge inside the park.
A full day exploring Tsavo East. Visit Mudanda Rock, a natural water catchment that draws elephant through the dry months and the Yatta Plateau, the longest lava flow in the world. Picnic lunch in the bush. Evening game drive and overnight at the lodge.
Transfer across to Tsavo West, a greener and more mountainous landscape. Visit Mzima Springs, where an underwater viewing chamber lets you watch hippo and barbel from below the surface. Afternoon game drive and overnight at your Tsavo West lodge.
Morning game drive on the way out of the park, then drive south east to the coast. Cross the Likoni ferry and continue to Diani. Arrive mid afternoon and check into your beach hotel. The rest of the day is yours. Overnight at Diani.
A free day on the coast. Optional extras include a snorkelling trip to Kisite Marine Park, a dhow cruise, kitesurfing lessons, or a visit to the Colobus Conservation sanctuary. Or simply stay on the sand. Overnight at Diani.
A relaxed breakfast and time on the beach before checkout. Transfer to Moi International Airport in Mombasa for your onward flight, or continue to Nairobi by road or air if preferred.
