The Biggest Mistakes First Time Kenya Safari Travellers Make

Most safari disappointments trace back to the same handful of avoidable decisions. Here are the ones we see most often.

Cramming in too many parks

Five parks in seven days sounds thorough and feels exhausting. You spend the trip in transit. Two or three parks with two nights each gives you a far better experience.

Booking the cheapest quote without reading it

A quote that looks 30 percent cheaper usually excludes park fees, or puts six strangers in your vehicle, or houses you two hours outside the reserve. Compare inclusions, not headline prices.

Underestimating the cold

Game drives leave before dawn and the Mara sits at 1,500 metres. Visitors routinely arrive with only shorts and t-shirts and spend the best hour of the day shivering. Bring a proper fleece.

Expecting guaranteed river crossings

Migration crossings cannot be scheduled. The herds move on their own timing. Staying three or more nights near the Mara River considerably improves your odds, but nobody can promise it.

Skipping travel insurance

Medical evacuation from a remote camp is expensive. Insurance that covers it costs a fraction of the safari itself.
