The Samburu Special Five

4 Sep 20261 min read

Five dry country species found in northern Kenya and almost nowhere else on the standard safari circuit.

Grevy Zebra

Larger than the common plains zebra with narrower stripes and rounded ears. Endangered, with most of the world population in northern Kenya.

Reticulated Giraffe

Sharply defined polygonal patches separated by clean white lines. Visually the most striking of the giraffe subspecies.

Somali Ostrich

Distinguished by blue grey legs and neck rather than the pink of the common ostrich. Restricted to the Horn of Africa.

Gerenuk

A long necked antelope that stands upright on its hind legs to browse, holding the position for minutes at a time.

Beisa Oryx

Grey bodied with black facial markings and long straight horns, superbly adapted to survive with very little water.
