Quick answer: Mikumi National Park covers 3,230 square kilometres in southern Tanzania, about 300 km west of Dar es Salaam on a surfaced road. It borders the Nyerere ecosystem and its open Mkata floodplain is often compared to the Serengeti for its scale and visibility.
Mikumi is the practical southern alternative to the northern circuit. It is close enough to Dar es Salaam for a weekend, the main road runs straight through it and the Mkata floodplain gives long open sightlines. Lion, elephant, buffalo, zebra and eland are all resident and the park connects ecologically to the far larger Nyerere reserve to the south.
