Rwanda permit costs more than Uganda at 1,500 US dollars, but the access is unmatched: Kigali to the park is a two hour drive on good road, which makes a gorilla trek possible in a long weekend. The setting beneath five volcanoes is spectacular.

The Full Itinerary
Arrive in Kigali and take a short city tour including the Genocide Memorial, which most visitors find essential context for the country. Drive north to Musanze in the afternoon, arriving beneath the Virunga volcanoes. Briefing for the morning trek. Overnight near the park.
Meals: Lunch and dinner · Overnight: Lodge, Musanze
Report to park headquarters at 07:00 for briefing and allocation to one of the habituated families. The trek can take one to six hours depending on where the family has moved, followed by one hour in their company. Afternoon free, with the optional Dian Fossey hike or a visit to the Iby Iwacu cultural village. Overnight at Musanze.

An optional early golden monkey trek, or a relaxed breakfast, then the drive back to Kigali. Time for craft shopping before your departure flight.
